If you're a person with a low income experiencing a family law issue, you may be eligible for free legal advice over the telephone from a family lawyer.
Family LawLINE lawyers give brief "next step" advice about family law issues such as:
- parenting time or contact/access,
- guardianship/custody,
- child support,
- spousal support,
- property division,
- family agreements,
- child protection, and
- court procedures.
You may be able to get this help whether or not you qualify for a legal aid lawyer. See Do I qualify? on the Legal Aid BC website.
To be considered for the Family LawLINE service, call Legal Aid BC's province-wide Call Centre during the times listed below. An intake worker will ask you questions about your financial situation and your legal issue. If you qualify, you'll be transferred to the Family LawLINE service.
If you don't qualify for Family LawLINE services, the intake worker might refer you to a legal aid navigator. They can also refer you to other resources and help you determine which community services are available to you.
Interpreters are provided if you need services in languages other than English.
